Make an Easter Egg Pocket Pouch Craft

Easter Egg Nest, made from paper plate pocket.

       Young students can make these easy paper plate, egg pockets a day or even a week, if they are in Sunday school, ahead of time. Then teachers can fill them with a chocolate treat or two for the Easter egg hunt later. Once children have participated in egg hunts, Sunday breakfast and service etc... they may take the extra surprise home!

 

Supplies Needed:

• two paper plates
• one brass fasteners
• colored markers or pencils
• green construction paper or tissue paper
• Easter grass
• Easter eggs or chocolate candies
• white school glue
• scissors
• white construction paper

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Cut a large egg shape from the white construction paper. This egg shape should be smaller than the diameter of the paper plates, but very large, leaving approximately one inch from each end of the paper plates showing.
2. Draw repeating patterns across the egg shape. Then coloring the patterns in using either markers or colored pencils.
3. Cut strips from the green tissue or construction paper. Using scissors cut ruffles or 'blades of grass' along one long length of the stripes. 
4. Glue the paper grass behind and around the large patterned Easter egg. Let dry.
5. Mount the egg and grass onto the center of one of the paper plates using school glue. The plate should be inverted, because you want it to form a hollow pocket when attached to the second plate.
6. Use a green marker to color the background edge of this paper plate if you wish.
7. Now turn the paper plate over and use a pencil to draw a 'cracked' jagged edge down the center of the egg and plate lengthwise. This will be the opening of the egg to find treasures stored inside of the Easter egg pocket.
8. Attach only one side of the egg decorated plate half to the edge of the back paper plate half. Use glue squeezed along the rim to do this. let it dry completely before proceeding to the next step.
9. Poke a small hole using the tip of your scissors or a hole punch, right at the edge of the back paper plate where you want the upper part of the egg pocket to attach and move open and shut to reveal the contents of the pocket.
10. Insert the brass fastener.
11. Now fill the paper plate pocket with Easter grass and treats for each student when they come back to class to show off their crafts to parents, brothers and sisters. This is the teacher's surprise for a party...

Print, Cut and Color a Vintage Rocking Bunny

Directions for Making This Vintage Easter Toy: Paste the cutout on cardboard. When the paste is dry, cut around the outline of the rocking bunny toy. When the toy has been cut out, bend it back along the dotted line in the middle, between the ears. Color the toy. Cut out the flaps and bend these at the lines. Paste the two braces at either end of the rockers between the two bunnies on the inside of the toy. Now you have a fun rocking bunny for your Easter table top!

Color The Passion Flower

Description of Coloring Page:  Passiflora, known also as the passion flowers or passion vines, is a genus of about 550 species of flowering plants, the type genus of the family Passifloraceae.They are mostly tendril-bearing vines, with some being shrubs or trees. They can be woody or herbaceous. Passion flowers produce regular and usually showy flowers with a distinctive corona.

       The flower was named after the Passion of Christ by Catholic priests during the 15th Century, The five sepals and five petals symbolize the 10 apostles faithful to Christ during his persecution (holy week) and the corona filament represent the crown of thorns that Jesus wore as he hung on the cross.

A Hat To Trim

      Here is an opportunity for all the little readers to play milliner and try their ingenuity at trimming a hat. The little men are invited to compete with the little women. And it wouldn't be at all astonishing if a little man were among the prize winners, for every one knows that sometimes boys are endowed with as good taste as girls. There is such a variety of trimmings that even the most particular milliner must find something to suit to a "T." If she should want a hat severely plain, she will find a band and stiff ribbon bows or quills to use; if a more dressy hat would suit her better, there are flowers, fruit, chiffon and ostrich plumes. The hat should be pasted on a sheet of white paper, the trimming arranged as desired and then pasted in place on the hat.

A Mother Goose To Cut Out

Cut around the outline of goose and wings. Fold the goose together and cut out triangle. Bring the parts A and B together and fold dotted lines. Roll up one wing and place through triangle so that C. D. and E. in wings will fit in through dot F. Slip a string under it and slide Mother Goose along the String.

Craft a Paper Robin Toy for Spring

"Little Robin Redbreast Sat upon a rail:
 Niddle, naddle went his head:
 Wiggle waggle went his tail"

      Cut out the circle, Figure 1, and the robin, Figure 2. Cut slits along the heavy lines A and B, and D. D. Figure 1, Slide the robin's head from the back of Figure 1 through the slit A. his tail through slit B. Push the strip E, Figure 2, through slit D. D. Figure 1. Bring the short slit in the robin's breast, C. Figure 2, down over the Space C. below the slit A. Figure 1. Move the strip E. from side to side, and see the little bird try to get the grasshopper for his dinner, as he picks at it, moving his head and tail up and down, just like a real live robin. Figure 3 shows how Figure 1 and Figure 2 look when properly put together. You can recite the rhyme from Mother Goose just below the image above, as you play with the toy.

Color A Celtic Resurrection Butterfly Cross

       I used metallic ink pens to color in my teacher's sample cross drawing. These inks really stand out if you draw with them on dark or black construction paper. Although, I chose to draw on a nice acid free paper for this particular activity (construction paper fades rapidly). The project is designed for students fourth grade and up. I've included patterns for the butterfly and cross below for those of you who would like to draw a cross very similar to mine. I colored the floral part of my design with Rembrandt colored pencils. These have a nice velvety texture that sharply compliments the metallic inks.

      The butterfly in the modern Christian church, and when I say modern I mean within the last 100 years, is used as a symbol for resurrection. This is because the metamorphosis that takes place during the life cycle of butterflies mirrors the lives of regenerated Christians in both life and death after the Holy Spirit indwells them personally. The cross, in turn, symbolizes the beginning of this resurrection process because of the ultimate price of salvation paid for us through Christ's death on the cross and His resurrection from the tomb.

      Encourage your students to frame their work if they are pleased with the results. I have found that many parents love to receive simple drawings such as these for a birthday or Mother's Day and/or Father's Day gift.

This is my teacher's sample of a Resurrection Butterfly Cross.
Students can use all kinds of metallic ink pens to color in their
 sketches. They will need to use a white or yellow colored pencil
to trace around their stencils before applying the inks. Although I
chose silver for my sample, this pattern would look just as
 attractive in gold or copper inks.

A hatching chick picture

      Students will need crayons or magic markers to color their eggs and chick for this picture project. They will also need scissors, white school glue, a print of the Easter chick template below and one sheet of 8 1/2 x 11 inch construction paper for their background.

This project also calls for the use of brass, paper fasteners.

      Some students may insist upon the construction paper being green or light blue because their thinking in art is more concrete or literal than their peers. Or, it may be that all of your students will choose these two colors depending upon their perspective. Do not insist, however, that students use green for grass or blue for the sky, if they choose not to. Children differ greatly when it comes to the interpretation of "how" art should look. Some students are more abstract in their thinking than others and there is certainly nothing wrong with this.

      The idea of  "Easter grass" is also loosely interpreted by manufacturers of the product. All types of Easter grass, be it plastic or shredded paper, is sold in the market place, in every color imaginable and you may wish to supply this for added dimension in your picture; in the pictured example, mine  is drawn.

      Eggs are also painted with an endless variety of colors, designs, and pictures. Some of your public school children may even include religious imagery on their eggs.

      Do not dictate or prescribe their choices. Remember that freedom of speech is only limited for teachers in public schools because they are paid by so many people, from all walks of life, who have many different beliefs. These limitations attributed to teachers are not the same, however, for the children that they teach. Therefore, it is neurotic to overreact to a student's choices concerning how they desire to represent the Easter holidays. If some of your school children include religious imagery for this project, you needn't make such a fuss. They have a right to their cultural ethnicity, opinions and creative endeavors. If you expect differences, then you will not need to overreact to unusual choices. I have left the eggs blank so that the children constructing and coloring the project may choose to decorate their own eggs as they wish.
      The black dot on the template is where you will need to poke a hole and insert a brass, paper fastener. Make sure that, when your students are ready to paste their eggs to the background sheet of paper, they do not paste above the small black line noted on the template. The upper part of the egg needs to be left unpasted in order to accommodate for the spinning chick!

       Students will need to print the above template out, cut and transfer the design onto heavy cardboard. By these means, students will learn about the making of templates and how basic patterns are designed. Teachers may choose to group students at tables so that one set of templates may be made and shared between three or four students. I never hesitate to add this step into an art project because students learn so much information about "how" to process through the designing of things. However, I would eliminate the step altogether under some conditions.

       In this teacher's sample I should note that the egg design on the right is original to it's former publication. Easter egg crafts from 100 years ago are far more elaborate graphically speaking than they appear today. This is the result, I believe, of artists immediate association/familiarity with Ukrainian immigrants at that time. Today, most folks immigrating from that area of the world to the United States are Muslim. Wouldn't it be interesting to do research on graphic history with your kids? Perhaps that should be my next big art history lesson?

Color Alphabet Chicks

      Use a heavy tipped, permanent, black ink marker to write all of the letters found in the word "chick" onto a large piece of white construction paper. Spread the letters out and repeat them if you'd like. Then, color lots of little chicks using the letters found in the word as a guide.
